Montsant
Montsant is a Spanish wine region just across from the famous Priorat, sharing some of the same dramatic landscapes and a love of bold, expressive reds. Perched on rugged slopes around the town of Falset in Catalonia, the vineyards benefit from warm days, cooler nights and a strong Mediterranean influence. The result is wines with depth and character, from ripe fruit to savoury, mineral notes.
This area is particularly well known for Garnacha and Cariñena blends. Many producers also work with other local varieties, depending on the vineyard and altitude. You’ll often find Montsant reds that feel structured rather than heavy, with firm tannins, bright acidity and a finish that lingers. Expect aromas such as blackberries, cherries, dried herbs and hints of spice, especially in bottles aged for a period of time.
If you’re curious about wines that sit between everyday drinkability and serious complexity, Montsant is a brilliant place to start. It’s ideal with a range of food, from grilled meats and hearty stews to roasted vegetables and hard cheeses.
