Sherry is a beautifully distinctive fortified wine from south-west Spain, made from grapes grown around Jerez. What makes it stand out is the traditional ageing process, where the wine can develop under a layer of natural yeast called flor. Depending on the style, that results in flavours that range from dry, nutty and delicately salty to deeper, richer notes of dried fruit and toasted caramel.

If you’re new to sherry, it helps to start with the style names. Look for Fino for a light, crisp, bone-dry style with almond and savoury character. Manzanilla is similar, but typically slightly more coastal and briny. For something fuller, Oloroso tends to be richer and nuttier, often with a warm, toasty finish. Sweeter options such as Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel are great if you enjoy treacle-like sweetness and aromas of raisins.

Sherry works wonderfully with food too. Try it with tapas, olives and cured meats, or serve a dry style alongside seafood. A little variety in the range can make it a brilliant choice for dinner parties and relaxed evenings alike.
