Argentina
The world’s fifth-largest wine-producing nation, Argentina produces a wide range of excellent-value varietal wines (largely red, with Malbec the success story so far but also, an increasing number of delicious whites) across all price points. Since the 1990s it has benefited greatly from an influx of international investment and expertise, and while it has done well to edge its way onto the world stage it still has a way to go before completely stealing the limelight. Competition in international markets from behemoths like Australia or neighbouring Chile mean it won't be a story of overnight success for Argentina. But year on year the wines get better and more and more people fall for the charms of Argentina's structured but oh-so quaffable wines.
Mendoza
Argentina has a varied wine producing scene. Argentina makes typically bold, ripe wines and is most well known for its production of high quality Malbec and its indigenous white variety, Torrontes. Mendoza is Argentina's main wine producing region, nestled against the Andes, with its high altitude ensuring it can produce quality wines, despite its proximity to the equator.
Malbec, their iconic variety. Though originally from Southwest France, this red variety is better suited to Argentine soil than to any other. In Argentina Malbec found ideal environmental conditions for its development and gave origin to exceptional wines. Mendoza is known as the producer of the finest Malbec wines.
