Roussanne
Roussanne is a variety that comes from southern France, most famously from the Rhône, where it’s often valued for its generous, honeyed character and its ability to develop beautifully over time. It’s a white grape, but it doesn’t feel light and fleeting in the glass. Instead, expect flavours that lean towards ripe pear, soft stone fruit and, as it matures, notes of almond and delicate spice.
What makes Roussanne particularly interesting is its texture. Wines from this grape can be pleasantly full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel, while still showing a gentle freshness that helps balance richer flavours. It’s also known for its tendency to produce wines with a naturally aromatic depth, even when the style is kept fairly restrained.
Many producers choose to mature Roussanne in contact with oak or on lees, which can add layers of toast, vanilla-like warmth and a subtle mineral edge. If you enjoy whites that feel more like a conversation than a whisper, this is a grape range worth exploring. It pairs well with dishes like roast chicken, creamy pasta, seafood chowder and butternut squash recipes.
